According to the developer of Chiropractic, BJ Palmer, a clumsy slip and fall may seem like a small thing.  But the cascade of events that follow could potentially lead to bigger problems down the road.

The slip, however insignificant, creates an unexpected jar to the spine... vertebrae become misaligned (subluxated)... nerve pressure ensues... tissues become starved of instruction... malfunction follows... sickness develops... potential is robbed... and the course of Life is altered.  All from an inconsequential, embarrassing moment in time - unless remedied soon after the event.

No matter how minor the slip, your Chiropractor would rather evaluate you right away to be safe.  Not only can they adjust you back into alignment if necessary, correcting Subluxations sooner can thwart disruptions in your Life (and the Lives of others) later.  After the fall, do us all a favor and get checked.

How many times have you had a minor fender-bender, or a slip on the sidewalk and never gave it a second thought?  Maybe your ego was bruised, but you didn't notice any outward signs of injury.  What happened to you on the inside could be a different story.

After a trauma, things may appear fine on the outside, but it doesn't mean they're OK on the inside.  That's why we open egg cartons and check the contents for hidden damage before we buy them.  The same goes for your spine after any jolt.  What may seem like a minor bump from the outside, could actually create SUBLUXATIONS on the inside.  (Misaligned vertebrae that interfere with nerve function, and silently diminish health)

What’s the smart thing to do?  Get your spine checked for SUBLUXATIONS after any trauma, no matter how big or small.  If your kid takes a tumble down the stairs - get them checked.  If your spouse backs the car into a fence post - get them checked.  If you tripped over the dog on the way to the refrigerator last night - get yourself checked too.  Life's tough enough without having to live it SUBLUXATED.

It's a common question Chiropractic patients have… “Hey doc, what do you think did it to me this time?  Is it the way I’m sleeping, or maybe the stress at work?”  To tell you the truth, without 24/7 video surveillance of your every move, it’s difficult to tell.

Trying to determine what specific activity created your Subluxations is like trying to figure out which pothole in the road knocked your car out of alignment.  They all contribute to it.  And driving in fear – worrying about every rock, crack and ditch your car travels over, will only stress you more.

Instead of fretting over every scenario that could throw your spine out of alignment, it’s healthier just to get checked and adjusted on a regular basis.  Physical, mental and chemical stress is an everyday part of Life.  Chiropractic care simply helps you get past all the bumps you’ll eventually hit in the road.

If you've ever crashed your bicycle and twisted the handle bars out of whack, you probably got up, stabilized the front tire between your knees and muscled the frame back into alignment before hopping on again.  Everyone knows riding a bike with crooked steering could put you at risk for another spill down the road.

After you've crashed your body (i.e. lifted a heavy weight incorrectly, fell asleep on the couch or spent 8 hours sitting in front of a computer), your spine may also have slipped out alignment.  A healthy posture requires your head, shoulder, hips and feet to line up properly for your spine to maintain functional integrity - just like handlebars of a bike need to line up with the frame and tires to steer properly.  If one part of a mechanical structure becomes misaligned (like your head isn't balance over your shoulders, or your hips aren't balance over your feet) it will create undue stress on the rest of the system and increase the risk of catastrophic failure.

If riding with crooked handle bars feels awkward, just imagine how your muscles, joints and ligaments feel when you try to perform routine, daily activities with a crooked spine.  Maybe those annoying aches and pains are telling you "...it's time for a trip to the Chiropractor to get straightened out."

Undertaking a restoration project can be a harrowing task.  Depending on how much wear, tear and neglect you're faced with, it could take several months and a lot of money to get your rusted classic back to the way it looked in its glory days.

Getting your spine back in shape can be a big restoration project too.  Instead of re-chroming the bumpers, painting the trim and removing the rust, your Chiropractor will attempt to bring your spinal range of motion back to operating specs, correct any bad vertebral alignment issues and halt the progression of arthritic degeneration with protective care - all in an effort to undo years of neglect and poor maintenance on your part.

Too often, people leave spinal care out of their health regimen - waiting until something 'breaks down' before they give it proper attention.  Unfortunately when it comes to your spine, it's impossible to replace original parts once they've worn.  So please, take care of the ones you have now.

In the classic scene in The Wizard of Oz we find Dorothy, Toto, Tin Man and Scarecrow timidly walking through the woods on the lookout for the three dreadful threats conjured up in their imaginations - lions and tigers and bears, oh my...  In Chiropractic, the three big threats we warn patients about (the big three that cause Subluxations) are physical trauma, chemical trauma and auto-suggestion (thought) trauma.

According to the founder of Chiropractic, DD Palmer, approximately 20% of nervous system interference can be attributed to physical injuries or poisons from outside the body... like a slip, fall or overdose.  The remaining 80% can be traced back to persistent negative emotions or self-talk that literally build tension in your muscles, pull vertebrae out of alignment and freeze your nerve system in its tracks - rendering you stiff like a Tin Man, foggy brained like a Scarecrow and overly sensitive like a Cowardly Lion.

A Chiropractor can locate your Subluxations, restore normal spinal alignment and reduce nerve interference when necessary. But it's your responsibility to, 1. Be cognizant when any of the big three "T's" attacks you and 2. Get adjusted ASAP so worse problems don’t manifest. Doing so will keep you and your loved ones on the yellow brick road of health.
